I was pleasantly shocked by the number of celebrities in Hollywood, who have practiced chastity or abstinence before marriage, at a time when it is hard to convince some Ugandans that there is still a virgin in this country, especially on the other side of 30. Well, hope this makes a believer out of you:
YVONNE ORJI, 39
Yvonne Orji may have acted out a number of passionate sex scenes while portraying Molly Carter on HBO’s hit series, Insecure, but recently confirmed that she is still a virgin. And she is remaining celibate until her wedding night.
ADRIANA LIMA, MARRIED AT 27
The model remained a virgin until her wedding day, previously telling GQ magazine: “Sex is for after marriage. [Men] have to respect that this is my choice. If there’s no respect, that means they don’t want me.”
The bombshell wed Serbian basketball player Marko Jaric on Valentine’s day in 2009, but the pair divorced in 2016.
CIARA & RUSSELL WILSON, WEDDED AT 30 (CIARA) AND 27 (RUSSELL)
After meeting in March 2015, Ciara and Russell Wilson made a vow of celibacy to ‘build a stronger relationship.’
“I really believe that when you focus on a friendship, you have the opportunity to build a strong foundation for a relationship – and once you know you’re really great friends and you’re what we call ‘equally yoked,’ where you share the same values or the same outlook on life, it kind of sets the tone,” the singer told People.
JESSICA SIMPSON, WEDDED AT 22
Jessica Simpson, a daughter of former pastor Joe Simpson, was given a purity ring to wear aged 12 by her father. In her autobiography, Simpson praised exhusband Nick Lachey for staying ‘patient’ and letting her decide the pace of how their relationship would progress physically.
Jordin Sparks waited to have sex until marrying Dana Isaiah in 2017.
“I don’t want to give away bits of my soul to lots of different guys—I want to give all of myself to the right man on the right night,” she previously told Celebs Now. “And the right night is my wedding.”
JUSTIN & HAILEY BIEBER, WEDDED AGED 24 (JUSTIN) AND 22 (HAILEY)
During a 2019 Vogue interview, Justin Bieber revealed he abstained from sex until after his wedding to Hailey Bieber.
“[God] doesn’t ask us not to have sex for Him because He wants rules and stuff,” the Grammy winner explained. “He’s like, ‘I’m trying to protect you from hurt and pain.’ I think sex can cause a lot of pain. Sometimes people have sex because they don’t feel good enough.”
JULIANE HOUGH, WEDDED AT 28
Back in 2008, 19-year-old dancer/actress Julianne Hough told CosmoGirl magazine that she wanted to remain a virgin until marriage.
“I think when you say no, down the line it will be a better decision,” she said, following her split from ex-fiancé Zack Wilson.
Hough remained abstinent until tying the knot with Brooks Laich, who she split from in 2020.
MARIAH CAREY & NICK CANNON
Although they were not virgins, both Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon still opted to wait until getting hitched before having sex.
“We both have similar beliefs, and I just thought that it would be so much more special if we waited until after we were married,” Carey, now 54, told the Daily Mirror.
Carey lost her virginity in 1993 aged 24 when she married Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola, who was 45.
KEVIN & DANIELLE JONAS, WEDDED AT 22 AND 23
Unlike his younger brothers Nick and Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas made it down the aisle with his promise ring still intact. After two years together, the couple wed in 2009.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD, WEDDED AT 27
Carrie Underwood told Slate Magazine in 2007 that she was planning to remain a virgin until marriage. Three years later, she married Mike Fischer in front of 250 guests.
While speaking about his relationship with the country singer, the retired ice hockey player said they were ‘spiritually’ on ‘the same page and [understand] each other.’
Comedian Tina Fey revealed that she lost her virginity at 24 after marrying Jeff Richmond.
“[I] couldn’t give it away. That’s just good, Christian values, or, being homely,” she joked during a 2009 appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.
MEAGAN GOOD AND DEVON FRANKLIN, MARRIED AT 30 AND 33
The couple wrote a book about waiting for marriage and holding ‘each other accountable’ to their ‘commitment.’ Before their walk down the aisle, she told Life & Style: “Our wedding night will be the first time we’re actually together.”
