Celebrated radio personality and DJ Ssuuna Ben ‘munnamasaka’ was the unlikely Ugandan star at the Fireboy Live in Kampala concert held at Lugogo Cricket Oval last Saturday.

Ssuuna, ‘Masaka’s greatest export after nsenene’, came on stage at 9pm amidst cheers and ululations. For the next 25 minutes, he would play his famous ‘EDM’/Electric mega mix known to his legion of fans as “ebinyanyanyanya” served on “olusaniya”. Armed with an African violin (endingidi) to complete his rather local spin to deejaying, his performance kept revellers on their feet.

As he bowed out after 25 minutes, Ssuuna had sent a clear signal: “If you stick to what you know best and perfect that, you shall be recognized and invited to the high table without being a copycat.”

Fireboy on stage

At 10:30pm, celebrated Nigerian Adedamola Adefolahan alias Fireboy DML took to the stage to deafening cheers. He performed songs like Champion, Jealous, Vibration, Give Me Love, and Tatoo, among other songs off his Apollo album released in 2020. The Peru hit maker appreciated Ugandans for the warm welcome accorded to him and when he finally performed his globally acclaimed Peru remix featuring Ed Sheeran, the crowd went crazy. Some fans were even moved to tears.

The good backup from the band made the day one worth remembering owing to the great coordination of the entire concert. Filling the cricket oval post-Covid was a moment to relish by the revellers. The day had started with performances from Fik Fameica, Navio, Zex Bilangilangi and Sheebah Karungi.

From this set, it was Sheebah’s electric performance with Crysto Panda that excited revelers the most. The DJs including Slick Stuart & Roja, Spinny, and Fem DJ commanded the interludes masterfully.

Away from the minor glitches in the sound system during Ssuuna Ben’s performance, the concert served Ugandans a full course meal.

It was a full house
