The Hate U Give addresses police racial tensions

This film revolves around Starr Carter whose life changes when her childhood friend Khalil is fatally shot during a routine police check.

Feeling no support coming from her community coupled with the police refusal to reveal her as a material witness, Starr decides to become a voice against the unending police brutality plaguing her community.

Starr finds herself drawn into a divided community with her school mates dismissive of her background with the painful loss of a friend forcing her to stand up against unwarranted police violence.

This thought-provoking film delves into police violence and racial tensions that have been a core rights concern for the Black Lives Matter movement.

The film casts Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games), Anthony Mackie (Avengers: Infinity War), Common (John Wick: Chapter 2) and Algee Smith (Detroit).

The Hate U Give premieres this Friday at Century Cinemax, Acacia mall.
