A newly born baby girl, abandoned by her unknown mother has been rescued from a sugarcane plantation in Namabasa Ward, Mbale city, eastern Uganda.

Sarah Namono discovered the baby while returning home from church. She was alerted by an elderly woman who heard the baby's cries. The infant was found in a deep manhole, concealed under dry weeds.

Upon discovery, the baby was covered in maggots, particularly in her private parts and lower body. Namono and others bathed the baby with warm water before promptly reporting the incident to Half London police post.

Subsequently, the police took the baby to Namatala health centre IV for urgent medical attention due to the concerning condition in which she was found. Later, she was transferred to Mbale regional referral hospital for treatment.

Grace Akareut, officer in charge of Half London police post, condemned the appalling act of abandoning a newborn after carrying it for nine months.
