Kenyan cult leader Paul Mackenzie and 29 associates have been charged with the murder of 191 children whose bodies were found among more than double that number buried in a forest.

The defendants all denied the charges brought before a court in the coastal town of Malindi. One suspect was found mentally unfit to stand trial.

Prosecutors say Mackenzie ordered his followers to starve themselves and their children to death so that they could go to heaven before the world ended. More than 400 bodies were exhumed from the Shakahola forest.

Mackenzie was arrested last April after the bodies began to be discovered. He has already been charged with terrorism-related crimes, manslaughter and torture.

There have been different charges brought before different courts in connection with the killings.

Society must learn to inoculate itself from men (and rarely, women) with deadly gifts.

We all have gifts but some are born with deadly gifts. Today it is Paul Mackenzie and 29 associates, while in 1981 it was 27 men (or guns) and a man with a cause.

It all starts with a hypnotic personality (the gift), a cause and an inner circle (call them disciples), and in the end, hundreds dies (in case of Mackenzie), hundreds of thousands die (in the case of Uganda) or millions die ( the case of Hitler).

The charisma, the ability to speak and the manipulative streak is what marks them all out. In the end, the majority commit suicide, are killed or imprisoned but a small percentage survive. However, the deathly streak never stops until they run out of breath.
