The state minister of Tourism, Martin Mugarra Bahinduka, has unveiled the inaugural National Events Service Providers (NESPAS) Awards.

The prestigious awards are aimed at recognizing, honouring, and celebrating outstanding performance in Uganda's events service industry.

The awards, which are scheduled to take place at a yet-identified venue on October 26, 2024, were launched last Friday at the Skyz Hotel Naguru. The awards will feature over 40 categories, each designed to highlight different aspects of event management excellence, from event planners, caterers, decorators and technical support teams, videographers, photographers, and others.

Speaking at the launch of the awards, the minister said the hospitality sector faces the challenge of poor service delivery. He expressed displeasure at most of the country’s restaurants for poor service.

“At one of the popular restaurants in Kampala, I saw how the food was coming, and how much time it took to bring the wine. Someone serves the soup. By the time they bring the bread, the soup is very cold, and I was so disturbed,” he said.

Mugarra said it is not about the infrastructure or how sweet the food is; it is about that small touch, giving someone a service that lasts. He said the service providers must get it right from the onset by hiring qualified personnel and not just relatives who need a job if they want to leave a positive impression on revellers.

“I am glad that you're going to organize this beautiful event and that you are making it more professional. I hope that more people register,” Mugarra said.

Abel Mugisha, the president and co-founder of the NESPAS Awards, stated that the awards were created following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. During that time, a number of service providers who had gotten contracts lost money, and many were told to refund.

“We implore all service providers to come together so that we have the coalition and thinking time that we can move forward, grow together, and celebrate each other,” he said.

He stated that the country hosts over 30 million events annually, including and not limited to corporate, social, cultural, religious, national, and international ceremonies, among others. These events act as a channel of communication, celebration, marketing, and promotion of national, international, and local content. We shall identify, highlight, and award exceptional performance in individuals, businesses, and companies, fostering pride, fulfillment, and excellence in clients' events.
