The ministry of Education and Sports will this week recognise and award the 50 best primary teachers at the second National Primary Teachers Conference (NPTC).

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at London College of St Lawrence, Maya from September 5 to 7. According to the state minister for Primary Education Rosemary Seninde, the teachers will be awarded for their outstanding performance by President Yoweri Museveni before being treated to a dinner on the final day.

Seninde said the event is aimed at celebrating the contribution of teachers towards learning, community and national growth, as well as harnessing their partnership and innovation for development.

“The NPTC was initiated based on the premise that primary teachers are crucial to the delivery of Uganda’s educational goals as prescribed in the Education strategic plan, Uganda’s National Development Plan II, and Vision 2040 and ultimately the Sustainable Development Goals because they lay a foundation for education,” Seninde said.

During the first NPTC, the ministry launched the national primary teachers prize as a way of motivating teachers and improving learning outcomes at this level.

An assessment tool to select the best teachers focused on five areas with each carrying 20 marks; professionalism, teaching, learner development, school development and contribution to the community. Thirty-four districts feature with the best 50 teachers. At least 15 districts got two representatives each while 19 saw one teacher from each among the best.

Of the 50 best teachers, 24 are female are 26 male. Besides the award ceremony, Seninde said the event will provide a platform for primary school teachers to share experiences and best practices and strengthen dialogue to improve quality education under the theme; Quality Teachers Matter.

At least 4,000 primary teachers and 170 district and municipality officials will be exposed to teaching dynamics of the 21st century with emphasis on the development of instructional materials, leadership skills, entrepreneurial skills, and financial literacy, among others.
