Rotary club wants green schools in Jinja

The Rotary club of Jinja last week unveiled a campaign to plant 11,000 trees in schools.

The trees, which include fruit trees and eucalyptus, were distributed to 16 schools within Jinja district. The tree planting campaign is aimed at sensitizing learners on the merits of afforestation within their communities.

According to the club president, Francis Kimera, students will be critical in setting up a green learning environment for all.

Merissa Kaudha, a senior three student at Wanyange girls school, one of the beneficiaries, said she was happy trees would create a shade for learners.

Reports from the ministry of water and environment indicate that 98% of schools in  Uganda depend on trees for fuel whereas Uganda Prisons consumes 800,000 tonnes of firewood annually.
