HiPipo CEO Innocent Kawooya
Ugandan fintech guru Innocent Kawooya has been elected as a co-chair of the international open-source foundation Mojaloop Community Council for the year 2023. Kawooya, the co-founder and chief executive officer of HiPipo, becomes the first Ugandan to sit on Mojaloop’s governing council for three consecutive years.
This announcement comes a week after HiPipo released their 2022 40 Days 40 FinTechs #LevelOneProject report titled: Challenges, Choices & Opportunities in FinTech and IIPS for Africa.
The report highlighted the unique stories of over 47 emerging fintechs in the East African region. Members of the Mojaloop Community Council are recognizable leaders in the fields of digital innovation, financial inclusion, and fintech from all over the world. The international body is charged with plotting a course that will allow a matooke farmer in Kyanamukaka to sell directly to Mark Zuckerberg in Washington D.C.
Kawooya expressed pleasure in being part of this exclusive league of global leaders noting that this is not by accident because HiPipo – the organization where he has served as CEO for over a decade – are arguably Africa's biggest proponents of financial inclusion.
In November 2022, HiPipo was named by The Global Business Leaders Magazine among the world's top 20 companies accelerating innovation in digital financial services. Additionally, Wealth & Finance International awarded HiPipo as the #1 Best Financial Inclusion Organisation - East Africa.
“We are grateful to be a part of this council, where we can learn from peers that we greatly respect. It is a testament to the tremendous work I and the HiPipo team are doing to create a fully digitized world. To create a world in which all citizens have access to networks, financial and otherwise, to make their lives better,” Kawooya said, adding: “I look forward to serving the council and promise to do my best. I appreciate your ongoing support, and may God bless us all.”
Clearly, Kawooya has a great grasp of how technology is changing the world.
