It’s Fufa awards tonight

Former KCCA FC striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma is odds-on favourite to win Footballer of the Year tonight at the Airtel-Fufa Awards to be held at Speke Resort Munyonyo.

This follows a great 2016/2017 season for KCCA FC in which he topped the scoring charts with 21 goals as KCCA won the league and Cup double.

Sserunkuma was not just about goals but his movements off the ball caused havoc in opposition defences and, above all, he also excelled at the continental level where his goals elevated KCCA FC to the group stage of the Caf Confederations Cup.

Now playing for Buildcon FC in the Zambian league, he is vying for the accolade with former teammate Muzamir Mutyaba and Vipers defender Tadeo Lwanga, whose exploits for SC Villa last season earned him the nomination.

Mutyaba made the Fufa Best XI of 2016 and has continued to excel in KCCA FC midfield. He may not have grabbed many headlines but anyone who likes style and flair agrees he is the most dynamic player in the domestic league.

Meanwhile, whereas SC Villa fell short of winning any silverware last season, Lwanga stood out as the Jogoos finished in a respectable runners-up position in the league. His tackling, aerial prowess and leadership skills were key factors as Villa maintained the title challenge till the last few weeks of the season.

Fufa president Moses Magogo is looking forward to the event with relish.

“As we celebrate Uganda’s finest footballers, we are confident the Airtel-Fufa awards will continue impacting on the game of football,” he said yesterday. “The players, coaches and administrators know the value attached to the awards due to the quality display of football on and off the pitch.”

In the ladies category, Hasifah Nassuuna is aiming to win back-to-back awards after driving home the winner’s car last year. The UCU Lady Cardinals striker faces a tough challenge from  Olila High FC duo of Fazilah Ikwaput and Vanessa Karungi.

Winners of the male and female footballer of the year will drive home in new cars.
