Uganda Open: Angel hits treble

Home girl Irene Nakalembe missed a golden opportunity to win her maiden Uganda Ladies Golf Open title as Tanzania's Angel Eaton grabbed the top honours on the greens at the par-72 Kitante course, writes JOHN VIANNEY NSIMBE.

Tanzanian Angel Eaton clinched her third Uganda Ladies Open title on Saturday after edging home girl Irene Nakalembe by two strokes.

CHAMPION: Angel Eaton kisses the winner’s trophy on Saturday

Playing her first major tournament since giving birth in March this year, Eaton fired 76, 81 and 78 for a gross of 235 over three days to win the prestigious annual tournament.

With the latest triumph, Eaton adds to her earlier titles in 2012 and 2013, becoming only the second Tanzanian player to win the event in 14 years. Her compatriot Sophie Viggo won the 2005 edition of the tournament.

Nakalembe, who was the pre-tournament hot favourite, failed to take advantage of the absence of five-time tournament champion Flavia Namakula as she succumbed to the pressure of playing before the huge expectations from the home fans. Namakula opted for a professional career after winning last year’s edition.

After lurking in Namakula’s shadow for years, Nakalembe was widely expected to step up and gracefully take the honour. However, her 237 gross score (returning 78, 80 and 79 on day one, two and three respectively) was not good enough to keep Eaton at bay.

The foreigners enjoyed a lion’s share of the top prizes as Iddi Madina, another Tanzanian, and Kenya’s Anges Nyakio, finished second and third runners-up respectively. Madina grossed 238, beating Nyakio by a single stroke.
