KCCA ejected out out Champions League

KCCA FC have failed to make it to the group stage of the lucrative CAF Total Champions League after bowing out 3-2 on aggregate to South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns.

The home side settled for a 1-1 draw with the African reigning champions at the Philip Omondi Stadium on Saturday evening. Substitute Anthony Laffor netted a late goal to ensure Sundowns qualified for the next stage.

Sundowns were forced to make a quick changes after defender Watne Arendse pickled an injury before Geoffrey Sserunkuma gave KCCA FC the lead on 30 minutes.

Sserunkuma netted his fourth goal in the Champions League with a well taken finish after Brian Majwega's beautiful cross. Sundowns' goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands had a touch on the ball, but the powerful shot rested at the back of the net.

The home side continued to control the game, but failed to get more goals. In the second half the home side made two changes only for the visitors to get back strongly into the game and increased their attacks at goal. KCCA FC defender Habib Kavuma was booked for a bad foul.

Laffor made sure Sundowns qualified for the group stage with a hard shot that settled at the roof of the next past KCCA FC goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan.

"This has been a very tough game against a tough team. But I am happy we got the important goal that takes us to the group stage," said Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane after the game. The coach said he was happy that his players contained the game well and did what was needed of them.

KCCA coach Mike Mutebi said he was disappointed that his players relaxed and failed in the second half.  Mutebi's team will now play in the last phase of qualification in the CAF Total Confederations Cup.
