Uganda national men's basketball team stormed the finals of the FIBA Afro Zone V qualifiers in Egypt last evening after seeing off bitter rivals Rwanda.
The Silverbacks, who remain unbeaten in all their games stopped the Rwandan side 77-64 to qualify for finals where they will face hosts Egypt.
The win means Uganda qualifies for the 2017 FIBA Afrobasket Zone V championship to be held in Libreville, Congo later this year in August. Uganda will be playing in the 16-team championship for the second time.
In a game played at the Cairo Stadium, the Silverbacks led in the first quarter 24-15 before the Rwanda side made a come back to win the second quarter 13-17. In a tightly contested battle, Uganda managed to take an 18-17 lead in quarter three before closing in the last quarter with 22-15 win.
Uganda's Darius Pegues made 21 points, while team captain Stanley Ocitti and Joseph Ikong made 16 points each. For the Rwanda side, centre Kami Kabangu made 18 points while Kenneth Gasana made 17 points.
Uganda national women's basketball team, the Gazelles, who lost two of their games, stopped Kenya 62-59 yesterday. The female team also faces Egypt again today in do or die game, if they must qualify.
