Gulu police boss shot in 3am brawl

Shot: Joseph Ayiki

The acting Gulu District Police Commander ASP Joseph Ayiki is fighting for his life after sustaining gunshot wounds in a brawl last night.

Ayiki was shot in the right leg slightly above the knee by an Exposs Security guard. The incident took place at TAKS Centre, a daytime recreation centre in Gulu town.

Details are still scanty on circumstances that led to the 3am shooting incident. This morning, the scene had visible footmarks and a pool of blood outside the main entrance.

David Odwar, the director of TAKS centre says he is unaware of what took place. Odwar says the centre was closed at 10:00pm and he cannot explain what took place beyond that time.

A source within Exposs security group told URN on condition of anonymity that Ayiki was shot during a misunderstanding with the security guard over an office chair he wanted to carry from the centre.

"It is unclear how he entered the centre at 3am with all gates closed, without his official vehicle and escort, the source", said.

Ayiki was rushed to Gulu regional referral hospital for medical attention. Aswa regional police spokesperson Patrick Jimmy Okema says a police doctor and regional police surgeon have also joined them to assess his situation. Medical personnel at Gulu hospital say the DPC has been taken for an X-ray scan.

David Olanya, the security guard who reportedly shot Ayiki has been detained at Gulu Central Police Station. Last year, a security guard attached to the same security firm shot dead a lecturer at Gulu University in a misunderstanding over a parked motorcycle in front of dfcu bank Gulu.

Ayiki has been the acting District Police Commander in October since Martin Okoyo, the then DPC went on study leave.

The last time I was in Gulu, 1986 for burilas & museveni's war dogs were all over looking for reason to kill/arrest, even when it was Acholi soldiers that stood down & let all the other tribes that United for museveni have him, without a fight!

But all Acholi have learnt is violence against one another, while they crawl trembling, just hearing museveni's name!

Ah, Acholi even have tribal leader helping consolidate the demon who destroyed them!

Without shame, Acholi joined museveni after 30 years of the monster isolating/destroying them & at a time when those who brought him in don't want him any more!

What will museveni do to Acholi when he finally gets ownership of the entire zone?

All Ugandans know that shooting encroachers by security guards/army personnel/police seem to be the norm all over Uganda.

It has nothing with tribe; rather it is the present attitude of all Ugandans to think " Have gun, will travel" and you know who is to blame for this.

As regards to the Acholis trembling, they are a proud and peace loving people who never frequent the State House to kneel down in 'foot salaams' begging for 'crumbs'

This DPC guy must have been one of the most sophisticated thieves in the area, what was he doing climbing a wall in the night and what the hell did they arrest the security guard for shooting a thief who happens to be the DPC

I agree with you entirely. If that policeman climbed over the fence, then he is a tresspasser.

If after that, he forced himself into any structure, then that takes it a step further. If he tried to take something from there without the permission of the owners, then he is definitely a thief.

If he confronted the security guard, then he is a violent robber too. You see, that case needs better explanation than has been reported so far.

If you had stayed in Uganda, you would understand that the situation on ground is more fluid than you seem to make it and the line has grayed out significantly since 1986. Empathy please...
