What you need to know about a car’s fuel system

A car’s fuel system is made up of a network which includes a fuel tank, fuel pump, filter and injectors which is responsible for delivering fuel to the engine as needed when the car starts.

So, essentially, the function of the vehicle fuel system is to store and supply fuel to the engine. The engine intake system is where the fuel is mixed with air and then it can be compressed in the engine cylinder and ignited to produce energy or power.

Luswata Baker, a mechanic at Performance Autotronic Systems, says the fuel pump, fuel lines, fuel gauge and injectors make up the fuel system and complement each another. They help deliver fuel to the engine as needed for ignition of the engine.

The purpose of the fuel system is to provide a mixture of fuel and air to the engine of the car. Fuel systems are variously designed for petrol and diesel engines.

When you start your vehicle’s engine, fuel is pumped from the fuel tank which then travels through the fuel lines and is delivered through a fuel filter to the fuel injectors. The engine intake system is where the fuel is mixed with air, atomized and vaporized.

The basic symptoms of any type of vehicle fuel system that is showing signs of wear or deterioration include difficulty of the engine in starting; excessive engine smoke; evident fuel odours and stalling of the engine while driving.

If one notices any of these issues with his car, Baker recommends having the car checked out to avoid a car breakdown.

On the issue of maintenance of the fuel system, Baker calls for vigilance from drivers who fuel at ‘certain’ fuel stations that sell adulterated fuel.

“Such fuel can damage your engine and filtration system,” Baker noted. An engine’s performance can slowly diminish because of build up of dirt which clogs vital parts of the fuel system and causes reduced fuel efficiency and power.
