KASESE – Army worms have invaded Kasese District, destroying crops in this predominantly agricultural area. Charles Nyamutale, the District Plant Protection Officer, said that some of the most affected areas include Mubuku Prison where more than 200 acres of maize have been destroyed. “We are urging farmers to be on the alert,” said Nyamutale.
Other areas affected include Mubuku Parish, Maliba Sub-county in Busongora County, where over 1,000 acres of maize are also under threat. Nyamutale advised farmers to be on the lookout for the worms and report to the authorities immediately. He said the worms can be killed by pesticides used for spraying cotton.
The worms have attacked mainly the most productive areas in the district, sparking off fears of famine if they are not contained.
The Uganda Prisons Service that depends mainly on the maize from Mubuku and Ibuga farms to feed prisoners may suffer most if the destructive worms are not contained. Kasese District was invaded by similar worms two years ago, destroying crops in the same areas.
