Nasser Ntege Sebaggala, the losing candidate in the DP president general’s election says the new party Leader Norbert Mao is not that popular in his home region, northern Uganda, as he claims.

In an interview with The Observer at his home last week, the Kampala City Mayor and leader of the breakaway Liberal Democratic Party said the main opposition party, FDC, is more popular in northern Uganda than DP because the people in the region look to Besigye, a non-northerner, as a unifying factor.

“Mao has weaknesses as a person. For instance, there are people who say that he will bring more people in Northern Uganda to DP, but where will he get them [from]? Mao has been DP Vice President, Northern Uganda, but how many MPs, councilors does DP have in the North?” Sebaggala said.

He said that Mao would not have been elected Gulu LCV chairman in 2006, had it not been for FDC’s support.

“In his 42-member Gulu District Council, only two are DP members! There is no DP MP from Gulu. Mao supported Leander Komakech to replace him as Gulu Municipality MP but he lost miserably. Mao was the campaign manager for Ssebaana Kizito but how many votes did Ssebaana get in Northern Uganda?”

Sebaggala is wrong about Mao
written by Isaac Mufumba , March 11, 2010

This in my view is a case of a person with a log in the eye preoccupying himself with the speck in the neighbour’s eye!

Sebaggala talks of Mao having weaknesses as an individual, but who does not? Nevertheless, it is important to point out that Mao’s weaknesses are fewer in number and magnitude than those of Seya.

While Mao’s weakness might be failure to woo people in Northern Uganda to the DP or to campaign for its candidates to ensure that the party has many more councilors and MPs, Sebaggala comes across as a big time joker.

In the wake of his loss in the DP elections and the subsequent announcement that he was quitting DP to form his own party, someone came up with a joke that has since become a subject of discussion in many a forum.

Though it is the joke that we all know it is, it speaks volumes about what other people perceive Sebaggala to be: a poorly educated joker who has no business talking of leading Uganda. Below is the joke:

SEYA’S LETTER ( WHY AM LEAVING DP )
Dear Ugandans, This is your Mayor Seya writing to you. It is very sadi and surprise that I lose DP President to Norbert Mao yet I have been in DP for long ago, I have been in that party for 34 years old. DP has now become a party of robbers, even young man are now robbers.

Mao is still a young man who was born tomorrow when I was seeing and looking, when he was in nursery school, I was already big man with a shop on Uganda House.

Friends I need your support and caring because I want to form my own political party called SSP ( Social Security Party ) I am going to leave DP because they are now robbers, They steal me. I even have 8 reasons how they steal me in Mbale;

1.They decided to count votes at night when am feeling sleep.

2.Mao used ghost voters, all the ghosts from gulu voted for him.

3.There was also Makerere science especially Lumumba science. Mao was giving voters sweets to vote for him.

4.The people counting votes were using fingers and bottle tops to tally votes.

5.Mao was using American English to confuse the voters.

6.Mao used UPE kids to vote for him claiming they are not kids but just short people.

7.They hired Sudanese ninjas who disappeared with my votes at night.

8.This old bachelor called OO and Ssekids were campaigning for Mao when people were voting.

People with those 8 points you can clearly see how they steal me in Mbale. That is why am forming my political party and I know I can win elections because I have many people in higher places. I am the newer Obama of Uganda.

I am calling upon my friends in Goliath investments and Zadok to help me campaign. My OBs remember me, “BY THE WAY DON’T FORGOTTEN THAT WE WENT TO THE SAME SCHOOL LONG LONG TIME AGO.’’
My friends Zadok, Joshua, Allan, Phil, Jude, Nico and Geoffrey , I have appointed you my campaign managers. You are going to use makerere science to give all Ugandans sweets when am campaigning. If we win, you will become ministers.
People of Uganda if you vote for me: I will do the following for you;
1.I will give everyone Federo which is real not ants wings. I will even recognize the Uganja republic of Bobi wine.
2.I will put bore holes in every home so that there is clean water every where you go.
3.I will improve Bwaise and Kalerwe, I will make them hills like Naguru. We shall pour soils in Bwaise up to when it becomes a hill with no flooding.
4.I will build better roads like those in UK . The roads will be double Decker.
5.I will repair the clock tower and buy new batteries for the clock.
6.I will build another City Garden in Kawempe like that Silver City .
7.I will give everyone mobile phones and pakalast for a whole year.
YOURS TRULY, SEYA.
RELEASED BY ZADOK, SSP MOBILISHER
As I have earlier pointed out, I think that Sebaggala’s comments about Mao would appear like a case of someone with a log in the eye casting stones at those in mud houses. The consequences are dire when those in the mud houses hit back.
Let Seya concentrated on the development of the Liberal Democratic Party and let Mao try his luck.

The ambition of Seya.
written by ocen , March 11, 2010

It seems Seya would want to rule Uganda by all means. Whether he drives it on the road, in the forest or on top of a dangerous mountain, he care less.

Mao may have weekness, but Seya should know that the reason for people in North supportind FDC was because they some one to get rid of M7. All that time Saye and the rest in DP where fighting. Mao will get bigger support in the north than FDC, UPC and even NRM unless UPC chose rightly.

DP's problem is a narrow ideology;Mao is an NRM implant
written by omwouganda , March 11, 2010

Firstly, the problem with DP is that it still has a narrow ideology of religionism (Catholicism) and ethnic parochialism (it is seen as too Baganda-ish).

Secondly, I think Mao is also seen as an NRM implant, wolf in a sheep's clothing. One glaring example is when he was caught with a pseudo-propagandist guerrilla manifesto.

The security apparatchiks didn't take him to task about it, much less interview him. Instead Mbabazi just lamented about Mao being on a path to self-destruction.

Now everybody knows, most true, authentic Acholi would have been hounded by the security and savagely persecuted and thrown in jail; his alleged co-conspirators are in jail.

But not Mao. He got a slap on the wrist for coordinating, however wildly the allegations may have seemed, a guerrilla movement! Mao may be a kindred-lottery winner.

Mao cant win Besigye in the North
written by WAKHWEYA AHAMADAH , March 11, 2010

Had the DP Mbale elections been organised by the NRM or EC,DP would be in court and would win the case.It is shameful that candidates organized and supervised their own election. No wonder DP has taken too long to win and learnt no lessons.Bravo to Hajji Ssebagala for starting new party.Success to you

GIVE MAO A CHANCE
written by Kandles Trick , March 14, 2010

It is too early to judge the man. Who said that a prophet cannot be acceptable outside his own land. He is now wiser.

FDC won in the north because of war talk, that they controlled Kony and will tell him to just stop once in power. So the desperate war weary peasants gave votes to them. And I think there was intimidation.

FDC was seen as a front for Konny and who would dare oppose Konny's disciples! Besigye was rejected by his own village mates, but people treat him as a force in the north, so what if Mao gets support from elsewhere, Must he have a majority support in the north?

Did Museveni not loose elections in his village in 1980? just give the man fair judgment. Sebagala should stop the over bloated ego. Are Ugandans so naive as to expect them to aspire to be led by Seya! Seya should mobilize for Mao so that he may become RDC for Nakawa as a way of keeping him around.
