Recently, a certain British couple decided to get down with it on a beach in Dubai. So gutsy they were that while basking in the sun of the Middle-East, they just could not control that animal instinct – they stripped naked in front of other sun bathers and began to make love.
The police saved the day and arrested the couple. A colleague of mine was in support of the British couple. His argument was that the Arabs in Dubai should have eaten their cake and had it too.

He said: “When you open up your borders to tourists, let them be; after all you get the money from them and that is what you want.” Another lady added that there was nothing wrong done by the couple. If anything the Dubai Police was infringing on their right to enjoy themselves; maybe so.

But I would have done what the Police did: arrest them and throw them in jail and have them charged for a high level of moral degeneration. A sane adult has got to have a degree of restraint. Sex is supposed to be sacred and for the married like the British couple is, they should have known that.

Sex (French kissing, caressing and smooching to me) is supposed to be kept in the bedroom (privacy) although it is evident many Ugandans engage in it in discotheques, night clubs and music shows and anywhere else where people come en masse. People need to learn that borrowing all alien habits can distort society.

I think it depends where we are but a peck and a hug are just fine by me. Anything beyond that in public is really immoral in an African setting. Only a whore can have sex in public.

Dorothy Magumba, Social Worker
A hug is enough sign of affection in my view to my partner. But kiss or even touch and have sex in public? That is unacceptable. What kind of impression would you be making on the kids that hang out with their parents? That is a crime.

Nada Anderson, TV Producer
It would actually depend where I am because one must respect the values of each society they are in. I would peck but not a French kiss. In Europe, kissing may be okay in a public place but not in Uganda. Sex in a public place cannot be condoned even in Europe.

Tabitha Bawaya, 20, Therapist
I can kiss in public without any hesitation. I feel it is okay to show affection to my partner in that way. But that is the furthest I can go. In this society of ours how can you have sex in public?

Norah Nakimera, 23, Tourism
Romancing in public? No way. That is very silly and immoral. Such kinds of things cannot be accepted in our society. I guess you can hold hands as a couple but not do things meant for the bedroom in public.

Loveworth Bukenya, 25, Computer Science
Some of the affection practices infiltrating our societies are really for the whites and not African, let alone Ugandan. Practices like kissing and whatever follows are only bedroom matters not for hangout joints.

Mark Sengonzi, 34, Civil Engineer
Expression of intimacy in public is an abomination and you can only be viewed as a wrong element in society without proper manners. I can only hug to show affection, period.

David Kwalima, 25, Information Technology
A simple kiss can suffice for me. That is the extreme I can go to in showing my partner affection. This business of fondling, touching and smooching; I would have to be mad first to do such in public because it is obscene.

But again whom should you hug and whom should you not?
